2023 Scholarship Recipient

Stacy Filipiak

(and AJ Williams, her son)

Stacy Filipiak, a United States Air Force veteran who served for 12 years, including Operation Southern Watch after the Gulf War, is a proud recipient of the 2023 Folds GR Endowment Scholarship. As a 90% disabled veteran, she understands the challenges faced by military families and like many, prioritizes education in her household.

For this reason, her youngest son, AJ Williams, applied for Grand Rapids Community Foundation scholarships, including one from Folds GR. Recognizing the importance of higher education, AJ was awarded a $5,000 scholarship to attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, to pursue a degree in elementary education with a focus on special education. His goal also centered around earning a master’s degree in administration.

Reflecting on this recognition, Stacy shared, “As a veteran who has served their country, for someone to acknowledge that, meant a lot to me and it meant a lot to AJ.” The scholarship ensured that AJ could continue his academic journey and make a meaningful impact in education, carrying forward the values of service and dedication instilled in him.

2022 Scholarship Recipient

Brian Guttersen

Sergeant First Class Brian Guttersen dedicated his life to serving his country. Inspired by his grandfathers who had both served in the military, he knew from a young age that he wanted to be part of the United States Army. He enlisted on his 21st birthday, fulfilling his lifelong dream. After leaving active duty in 2011, he continued his commitment to service by joining the Army Reserves.

Tragically, Brian made the ultimate sacrifice as a fallen veteran. His dedication to duty and country is honored through the Folds GR Endowment Scholarship, which was accepted on behalf of his widow, Lauren, and awarded to his young son, Griffin.

Lauren expressed her deep appreciation for the support, sharing, “It’s definitely that peace of mind knowing that there are a ton of people out there who are very supportive of military families, but in this way for Griffin, just knowing that he’s taken care of in that respect, I so appreciate it.”

Through this scholarship, Brian’s legacy of service and sacrifice continues, ensuring that his son has the educational opportunities he deserves.
